Your Guide to Incline Village Dog-Friendly Beaches Off-Season

IVGID opens Ski Beach to dogs on Saturday, October 17, with its annual Puppy Plunge. There's a dock-diving competition, and the entry fee is a jar of peanut butter. It's a good party. It also covers less ground than the date suggests.

Around Incline Village, four different agencies write the off-season dog rules, depending on whose land you're standing on. The district's beaches allow dogs on a single stretch of one beach, and only with a pass holder. Three miles south, Nevada State Parks and the Forest Service allow leashed dogs on a longer list of beaches, coves and trails. Ask "where can the dog go this winter" and the honest answer is a map of who manages what.

One beach, west of the ramp

IVGID's off-season dog policy is short. Dogs are allowed only on Ski Beach, west of the boat ramp, after the beaches close for the season. IVGID gives that season as "typically October 15 through April 15." Dogs must be with an owner who has beach access. This year the district is marking the start with the October 17 event, so treat that as the 2026 opening date.

Off-season access works the same way as summer access. You get in with an IVGID Picture Pass, a Recreation Punch Card, or as a paying guest of a Picture Pass holder. IVGID's beach pages don't list a separate dog pass or dog fee. Beach entry is free for Picture Pass holders. Guests pay $18 for adults, $10 for ages 6 to 17, and nothing for ages 5 and under. The 2026–27 Recreation Punch Card for a parcel with beach access carries $173 in value. It's a general recreation card, not a dog permit.

Gates open at dawn and are locked from dusk to dawn. That matters more in December than in July, because the usable window gets short. IVGID asks owners to clean up after their dogs. The district's waste guidance notes that picking up after a dog is the owner's job under Washoe County ordinance.

Two things the rules don't settle. The policy doesn't extend dog access to Incline Beach, Burnt Cedar or Hermit Beach, so those stay closed to dogs all winter. And IVGID's current pages don't say whether dogs on Ski Beach must be leashed. The only explicit leash rule in the district's beach regulations covers pets being moved to watercraft on the pavement. If you need a definite answer, call Parks & Recreation at 775-832-1310.

Ski Beach is carrying more than usual this year

The dog zone hasn't moved, but the beach around it has changed. The Incline Beach House construction project closed the normal entrance at Incline Beach and opened a temporary one to the west, closer to Village Blvd. Fencing around the site took out parking spaces, and IVGID has been sending beachgoers to the Aspen Grove and Overflow lots across Lakeshore Boulevard. As of March 2026, completion was scheduled for mid-summer 2027, so the impacts run through another beach season.

Next door, Ski Beach took on the Beach House's summer role. Food and beverage service moved there, and Music on the Beach moved there for 2026. The Puppy Plunge page sends people to the same two lots: Aspen Grove and the Overflow Lot.

So the only district beach open to dogs this winter is also the one that served as the district's main summer beach while construction continued next door. IVGID's construction updates don't announce any change to the dog zone or to how dog access works this off-season. Expect the old rule, west of the ramp, with parking across Lakeshore.

The October 17 plunge, step by step

Puppy Plunge details as IVGID lists them for 2026:

  1. When: Saturday, October 17, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  2. Where: Ski Beach, 967 Lakeshore Blvd.
  3. Sign-ups: Dock-diving registration opens at 11:30 a.m.
  4. Competition: Starts at noon.
  5. Entry: Bring a jar of peanut butter.
  6. Parking: Aspen Grove or the Overflow Lot, across the street.

The event is run with Pet Network Humane Society. IVGID also thanks The Pet Station and Tahoe-Incline Rotary for their support. The page doesn't list a cash fee. Ski Beach is still a restricted-access beach for pass holders and their guests, even on event day.

South of town, the rules get wider

Leave district land and the rules loosen. The Tahoe East Shore Trail runs about three miles of paved path from Incline Village to Sand Harbor. Travel Nevada lists dogs as allowed on leash, with the trail open sunrise to sunset. That makes it the one route out of town where a leashed dog is welcome every month of the year, not just in winter.

At the far end of the trail, Sand Harbor flips each fall. The park's FAQ says pets are banned from April 15 to October 15. From October 16 through April 14, dogs are allowed on a six-foot lead, must stay leashed, and owners must pick up waste, with bags provided around the park. Nevada State Parks' main park page lists the pet season as October 15 to April 15 instead. The two pages are one day apart at each end. Waiting until October 16 keeps you within both.

Farther along the shore, the Forest Service lists Hidden Beach and Chimney Beach as places dogs are allowed. Its general rule is leash on and waste picked up, with no separate seasonal dates for those beaches. A Sierra Sun beach guide from August 2026 puts Hidden Beach about a mile south of Incline Village. Up at Spooner Lake & Backcountry, Nevada State Parks allows pets throughout on a leash no longer than six feet. That includes the area around the 4.4-mile Marlette Flume Trail.

Here's how the rules compare:

Place Who manages it Dogs allowed Leash rule
Ski Beach, west of the boat ramp IVGID Typically Oct 15 to Apr 15; Oct 17 opening in 2026; owner must have beach access Not specified on current IVGID pages
Incline Beach, Burnt Cedar, Hermit Beach IVGID Not included in the off-season dog policy Not applicable
Tahoe East Shore Trail Travel Nevada listing Year-round, sunrise to sunset Leash required
Sand Harbor Nevada State Parks Oct 16 to Apr 14 per FAQ; Oct 15 to Apr 15 per park page Six-foot lead
Hidden Beach, Chimney Beach U.S. Forest Service Listed as dog-allowed; no seasonal dates given Leash required
Spooner Lake & Backcountry, Marlette Flume Nevada State Parks Allowed Six-foot lead

Up the hill, the rules depend on the segment

Tahoe Meadows off Mt. Rose Highway is less clear. The Forest Service page for the 1.3-mile Tahoe Meadows Interpretive Trail lists only a ban on motorized use and gives no dog rule. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association notes that dog rules vary by managing agency along the trail. It recommends leashes around other trail users, at trailheads, and on steep or slippery ground, and says dogs should be under voice control at all times. A leash in the pack covers every one of those situations, and on the Rim Trail it's the safer choice for anyone unsure which agency's segment they're on.

What Incline still doesn't have

The town has no permanent public dog park. IVGID's General Manager's Committee on a Dog Park formed in July 2022. Its job is to recommend a permanent, dedicated community dog park to the Board of Trustees, which includes reviewing possible sites and drafting design and operating concepts. The committee page lists upcoming meetings as "TBD." It also offers an email list for dog park updates and links past agendas and minutes on IVGID's CivicClerk portal. Until that process produces a park, Ski Beach, west of the ramp, is the only district-run shoreline where dogs are allowed.

Some dogs do have a job at the district beaches. IVGID's Goose Patrol, recruited by Parks Superintendent Steven Phillips, pairs screened volunteers with screened dogs in orange vests. The dogs chase geese off the turf without harming them, and the district's page shows dogs named Georgia, Charlie and Boomer.

The local support network is close by. Pet Network Humane Society and its Community Hospital sit at 401 Village Blvd., at the corner of Northwood Blvd. Tahoe Quarterly reported that a remodel there, running from February 2025 through September, added a dedicated surgery suite, sterile prep space and a larger X-ray room. The Pet Station, one of the Puppy Plunge sponsors, is at 800 Tahoe Boulevard.

For dog owners in Incline, the off-season comes down to two dates and one stretch of sand. Sand Harbor opens to leashed dogs on October 16 under its FAQ. Ski Beach follows on October 17, west of the ramp.
